Royal Swinkels once again named ‘Sustainable Brewery of the Year’

05-09-2024

For the second year in a row, the family business has won the title of ‘Sustainable Brewery of the Year’. In addition, the dedication of Sustainability Manager Marthijn Junggeburth has been recognized with the title of ‘Sustainability Officer of the Year’. A double recognition for the brewer and maltster's sustainable efforts. The Icons of Beer, part of the World Beer Awards, is an annual recognition for companies making an impact on the global beer industry. The jury evaluates breweries based on factors such as innovation and their commitment to sustainability.

"Winning this award for the second year in a row is a wonderful recognition for our family business and all the hard work we do in the field of sustainability. The special recognition for our Sustainability Manager Marthijn, who has been committed to a sustainable future at Royal Swinkels for many years, makes this moment even more special," said Peer Swinkels, CEO of Royal Swinkels. "Together, we are working towards our goal of becoming a better, healthier, and more sustainable player in the malt and beverage industry for the benefit of future generations. With initiatives like the opening of our emission-free malt house in Eemshaven and the approval of our CO2 reduction targets by SBTi, we are taking significant and concrete steps towards our ambition to operate fully climate-neutral by 2050. Being named the most sustainable brewer in both 2023 and 2024 confirms that our efforts and dedication are being recognized, and we are incredibly proud of that."

"The win of two sustainability awards fills me with pride. This is, of course, not an individual achievement. It shows that sustainability and circularity are deeply embedded in the DNA of our organization. Together, we are committed to making the entire chain more sustainable, with both large and small initiatives. Every step contributes to circular entrepreneurship," added Marthijn Junggeburth, Sustainability Manager at Royal Swinkels. "We also remain mindful of our local engagement at all our brewery locations. For example, we continue to develop the 'Boer Bier Water' project, where we return as much purified wastewater as possible to local farmers, both in Lieshout and at our Habesha brewery in Ethiopia."
