From beer tank to booking: “I map out the whole alphabet.”
31-07-2025As a Business Process Expert at Royal Swinkels, Robert Kerstens makes sure that commercial and operational processes behind the scenes run smoothly. He connects the business side with IT; spotting bottlenecks, driving improvements, and linking departments together. “From invoicing to beer taps, I want to know how it all works.”
It might sound complex, but Robert’s job is actually about making things simpler. “I work on process and system improvements across different departments,” he explains. “Take everything that happens around a bar or restaurant order: from installing the tap system to the purchasing and administration behind it. I leave the technical side to others, but I do want to understand what’s going on, where things go wrong, and how they can be improved.”
Robert is first and foremost a listener and a connector. “I talk to colleagues from all sorts of departments, like technicians, admin staff, application managers, and procurement. By understanding how they work, I can help make processes smarter.” His role is both advisory and analytical. “I’m like a filter between operations and IT. Not to explain everything in tech terms, but to make sure the whole process makes sense from A to Z.”
What helps him succeed is the freedom he’s given. “My manager often says, ‘Just work it out, I’ll catch up with you later.’ That trust really allows me to focus on finding solutions.” Sometimes those improvements are small, but they can make a big difference. “We recently started using new tank trucks that can carry multiple types of beer. That means we can plan routes more efficiently. Where we used to send two trucks to Groningen, now one will do.”
This is Robert’s third role at Royal Swinkels. He started as an Internal Account Manager, then became a Commercial Coordinator. “When this Business Process Expert role came up, I wasn’t sure at first. But I’m glad I took the opportunity. If you’re ambitious and you show it, Royal Swinkels gives you the space to grow.”
The collaboration is another thing he values. “The team is really involved. You’re never on your own. A lot gets solved just by having a good conversation.” Those short lines of communication are typical of Royal Swinkels, he says. “Whether you’re trying to figure something out or run into something tricky, there’s always someone willing to think along with you. People go the extra mile for each other.”
And there’s plenty of fun, too. “I often go for walks with colleagues from other departments. It’s a way to unwind for me. And if the weather’s good, I’ll turn a walk into a meeting as well.” He also enjoys the drinks and barbecues. “It’s nice to connect in a different way.” What gives him the most satisfaction is reaching shared goals. “Sometimes it takes a while, but when it all comes together, that’s the best moment. That’s when we raise a glass and move on to the next challenge.”
