In 2025, we made further progress toward emission-free brewing by installing an e-boiler at our Habesha brewery in Ethiopia and a hot water buffer in Lieshout. A full year of operation at our emission-free malt house in Eemshaven delivered substantial CO2 reductions, and all electricity we purchased was green. Together, these investments help us phase out fossil fuels and set the foundation for future sustainable energy upgrades.

Energy transition Lieshout

We prepare our Lieshout plant for net-zero operations. In 2025, we constructed a 6,000 m3 hot water buffer tank that stores residual heat from brewing and malting processes. It enables reuse of previously stored heat during peak demand and will reduce natural gas consumption by more than 15%. The 120,000 kilogram buffer is built using 93% recycled stainless steel, bringing circularity and CO2 reduction together in one solution.

E-boiler at Habesha brewery

The new e-boiler at our Habesha brewery in Ethiopia marked another major milestone. This electric boiler runs on Ethiopia's 100% renewable electricity grid, produces zero emissions and offers higher efficiency than the former diesel boilers. The switch reduces CO2 emissions by 500,000 kilograms per month.

Emission-free malt house Eemshaven

2025 marked the first full year of operation for our emission-free malting plant in Eemshaven. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the plant eliminates its previous annual gas consumption of 18 million cubic meters and roughly 33,000 tons of CO2 emissions. The result is an energy saving of about 67%, equivalent to the annual energy use of approximately 14,000 households.
